I have been in business for 10 years now and I have seen how important it is to follow Jesus in business. With all honesty, I can tell you that there were days that I forgot my faith and values and gave into despair when I was going through a rough time, and sometimes we also forget about our source when everything is going smoothly.
One verse that I hold on to in my business is Psalm 128:1-2
“Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours.”
As a Christian business owner or professional, it can be challenging to navigate the world of business while also staying true to your faith. However, following Jesus in your business is not only possible but essential if you want to be a positive influence on your community and make a difference in the world. In this blog post, we’ll explore some practical ways to follow Jesus in business.
6 Ways to follow Jesus in business
Start with Prayer
Prayer is a crucial part of any Christian’s life, and it’s no different when it comes to your business. Make it a habit to start each workday with prayer, asking for God’s guidance, wisdom, and favour. Seek His help in making decisions, treating your team and customers with respect and kindness, and maintaining integrity in all your business dealings.
Set Ethical Standards
As a Christian, your faith informs your values and shapes your worldview. Make sure your business practices align with those values by setting high ethical standards for yourself and your employees. This means being honest and transparent in your advertising, treating your employees fairly, and avoiding practices that exploit others. As Jesus teaches us in the Golden Rule, “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31).
Serve Others
One of the most powerful ways to follow Jesus in your business is to serve others. Look for ways to use your business to make a positive impact on your community. This might include donating a portion of your profits to charity, volunteering at a local non-profit, or offering mentorship to someone who could benefit from your expertise. By serving others, you not only make a difference in their lives but also honour God with your actions.
Build Relationships
Jesus placed a high value on relationships, and so should you. Take time to get to know your team and clients, and treat them with compassion and understanding. Show interest in their lives, listen to their concerns, and offer support and encouragement when needed. As you build strong relationships, you’ll find that your business will thrive, and your influence will grow.
Seek Wisdom
No one has all the answers, and that’s why seeking wisdom from others is essential. Surround yourself with people who share your values and can offer wise counsel. Seek out trusted advisors, whether that’s a mentor, a business coach, or a pastor. Listen to their insights, learn from their experiences, and be open to constructive feedback.
Be a Good Steward
Finally, remember that your business is ultimately a gift from God, and it’s up to you to use it wisely. This means managing your resources well, including your time, money, and talents. Make sure you’re investing in the things that matter, such as your family, your community, and the Kingdom of God. By being a good steward, you can make a lasting impact that extends far beyond your business.
In conclusion, following Jesus in your business requires intentionality, discipline, and a commitment to living out your faith in every area of your life. By starting with prayer, setting ethical standards, serving others, building relationships, seeking wisdom, and being a good steward, you can build a business that not only supports your family but also honours God and makes a difference in the world.
Here is a prayer for your business today:
Father, please bless the work of my hands. Let them produce something that build up the lives of others and adds beauty to this world. Father, I ask that the work of my hands be a benefit to everyone with whom I come into touch.
Not because of how talented I am, Lord, but rather because I know the master potter and architect of beauty. Lord, I want to use the blessing you have given me to help others. I want my work to inspire others and transform their lives. Let my skill bring hope to the desperate and shed light where there has been darkness. Lord, help me never to undervalue what you can do through the skills you gave me.
Give me the knowledge I need to use my time and energy wisely today. Bless my family’s finances and may this business be a tool to sustain us and may we be a blessing to many others through it.
